2009/11/09    Using A Rivet Gun Safely

A rivet gun can help you quickly fasten and secure steel or metal pieces together. In the home, riveting is mainly used in small construction projects and automobile repair.

How to Use Rivet Guns for Home Construction Work

ZIPP rivet guns (www.zipptool.com) can be useful for doing carpentry work at home. They can save a lot of time while joining aluminum sheets together, like while making shelters. All you need to do is to hold the two metal objects together with the help of a clamp. Make sure that both the objects are aligned properly as the rivets are permanent.

Use a drill to bore a hole through the clamped metal sheets. Keep in mind that the hole must have the same diameter as the rivets that will be used on them.

Load the rivet into the gun—the long and narrow end goes in first. Squeeze the trigger several times until you hear a popping sound. This indicates that the rivet has been released and the objects are fastened together.

Correct and Safe Way to Use Rivet Guns

Screws can be used for joining things together, but rivet guns offer more stability and a more finished appearance. Rivets are available in different lengths. Longer rivets are particularly useful for fastening thicker metal objects together. The only drawback of using rivets is that they tend to protrude through the object, which may lead to accumulating debris on the rivet.

If you are using materials which are softer than metals—like plastics or cardboard—then it is better to use a washer on the blind side of the rivet. This can help ensure that the objects are held firmly together and also prevent the protruding end from popping outside.

Tips for Using a Rivet Gun

  • Take care not to squeeze the rivet too hard while using it with the gun as there is a chance of damaging the rivet.
  • Rivet guns can be used to repair door clip screws with the help of threaded rivets to replace the broken screws. At times, these new threaded rivets may not fit into the existing holes. You can drill a new hole, although it may not look as attractive as before.
