One of the most common uses for a sander is to smooth a surface, especially on wood-working projects, as the edges are not always smooth following cutting. A piece of sandpaper is attached to the surface of the sander that create friction against the wood surface removing particules until the surface is completely smooth.

Thinning a Surface

In some circumstances, two pieces in a wood working project will not fit together as they are meant to. If two pieces of a puzzle are not going together properly, one of the best things that you can do is to trim or thin down one of the pieces in order to make them fit more fluidly. Care must be taken to ensure that you do not thin the surface too much, otherwise you may have the same problem without the ability to rectify it.
